If It Rains On Your Wedding Day Top Tips
Many couples worry about rain on their wedding day, fearing damp dresses and muddy venues. Living in the UK, especially in Yorkshire, means that even summer weddings can be affected by rain. From my 10 years of shooting weddings, I’ve compiled some tips for dealing with rainy wedding days. Even photographing weddings in Europe and Bali, it rained. As the weather is beyond our control, it’s best to be prepared and enjoy the day no matter what. In some cultures, rain on a wedding day is seen as good luck, symbolising cleansing and fertility, and some say it symbolises the tightening of the marital knot.
Below is Jess and Stuart with their crew; we found an excellent little spot for the groups so they could hide under the canopy, and I was the one getting drenched….and I loved it. We didn’t stop laughing. Oh, and yes, I also bring spare clothes to change into so I don’t look like a drowned rat for the rest of your wedding day!!!

Embrace it!!
“We can’t control the weather, so the best approach is to be prepared and embrace whatever the day brings. As a photographer with over 10 years experience photograhping weddings, I’ve written some top tips for enjoying a rainy wedding day to the fullest.”

Don’t Panic
If you are planning an outdoor wedding, it can be stressful, so it’s essential to have a backup plan in place, particularly for a woodland or garden ceremony. If your venue has suggested an outdoor drinks reception, make sure they have an alternative area for guests in case of rain. Get all your tribe on board with the plans, and ensure everyone knows what needs to happen if plan B needs to be implemented. However, if you are a wild-spirited couple and don’t care, provide lots of clear brollies, go with the flow, and get a little wet. I’m so up for this!!
Plan ahead for rainy weather and stick to your backup plan. Wedding pros and photographers can suggest cool alternative ideas, so feel free to ask them if you feel unsure. I’m always there to help my couples with lots of ideas.
If the wedding reception and drinks cannot be held outside, speak to your venue and see if they have a pretty area for group images—somewhere with plenty of space and where we can easily access them.
Even if it rains on your wedding day, I’ll ensure we capture beautiful outdoor photographs. I’ll keep a close watch on the weather and ensure we get the shots you want between showers. If it’s drizzly, we’ll find a covered outdoor location to keep you dry while getting stunning photos.
Like Tom and Emma’s fantastic Autumn wedding at Hooton Pagnell Hall, I saw so many places to hide from the rain and got some incredible imagery for them. I know Emman and Tom love this image with their brolly. In the worst-case scenario, if there is torrential rain all day, we can create incredible imagery inside. Give me a window, doorway, or arch, and we will have magic!!

ONE LAST THING
Just remember, the main reason you’re getting married is because you love each other. Don’t let the weather ruin your special day. If your dress gets muddy, it’s a sign that you fully embraced the day and had an amazing time.”. It makes excellent imagery, too. I always tell my couples that whatever energy you bring to the day is what is transferable to your guests and, ultimately, your images. So laugh in the face of rain and let it rip!!
I have shown you examples of imagery from rainy wedding days, and yes, you have noticed that no one looks unhappy or upset. Embrace it with some gusto so your photographer can tell your story, and the rain will be a fab part of that!!
