Merchant Adventurers Hall York
Matt & Laura
Now, let’s talk weddings at York’s Merchant Adventurers Hall. It’s like the fairy godmother of wedding venues in York City. It’s got that perfect mix of old-world charm and Instagram-worthy backdrops that will make your special day feel like a scene out of a period drama—with fewer corsets, hopefully – or not. Anything goes, hey!! If you choose to get married in the North of England, especially York, it has some incredible venues steeped in history and excellent spots for portraiture.
There is something so cool about a city-centre wedding! Laura and Matt’s relaxed York wedding was in one of the city’s most renowned venues, Merchant Adventurers Hall. I was very excited to capture the wedding photography for their special day. Merchant Hall was a venue I had been dying to tick off my list!

This is how we roll!!
Let’s go with the flow and see where it takes us. Then magic happens….we all end up in fits of giggles, I asked Matt to look the other way and he did, action man style…..nothing moved except the eyes!
Pure gold!!
Matt & Laura
Laura got ready at one of the city’s many hotels. Churchill’s is a fabulous place for wedding preparations. Also, it was a short walk to York registry office, which made it the perfect choice. It’s a building steeped in history and has stunning, quirky interiors, making it an ideal and great venue to shoot at. I always get drawn to some of the beautiful objects hotels and wedding venues have. This is super important to include as part of a couple’s wedding gallery’s storytelling and overall visual impact. I feel little details can make great natural breaks in the couple’s final imagery layout.
Laura and Matt said their vows at the registry office before hopping on an old vintage bus that took them and all their loved ones to the venue. After a short walk from the bus through the quirky streets of York, a glass of bubbles awaited them to start their wedding reception in the gardens. I like to think of them as secret gardens as you walk through the fantastic entrance to the Adventures Hall alongside the timber-framed building constructed by a fraternity of York citizens over 600hundred years ago. Couples can host their wedding breakfast and evening party in the great hall and the undercroft. It’s a magnificent old, quirky timber-framed building that made photographing Laura & Mats’s day super cool .
As a photographer, I loved photographing weddings at the Merchant Adventurers Hall. The place is a goldmine for stunning compositions and architecture. However, let’s not forget about York itself – it’s like a time machine plopped in the middle of modern-day England. With its winding cobblestone streets, crooked timbered buildings, and enough history to make your high school textbooks blush, York is a history buff’s paradise. Now, if we’re talking quirky, we must include The Shambles Street. It’s like Diagon Alley’s long-lost cousin, with its overhanging buildings and narrow, winding streets. Rumour has it that J.K. Rowling inspired Harry Potter’s magical shopping street right here. Whether shopping for wizarding supplies or enjoying the quaint charm, The Shambles is a must-see. And the last thing I want to mention about York is, York Minster, the granddaddy of all cathedrals. This stunning Gothic masterpiece will question your neck’s flexibility as you crane it upwards to take in the towering stained glass windows and intricate stonework. Simply Stunning!!
